Garden of Yesterday to The Garden of Tomorrow

Garden of Tomorrow vacant lot

In the heart of South Phoenix lies The Garden of Tomorrow (GOT), a remarkable testament to the power of community, determination, and the belief that a vacant lot can be the birthplace of change. 17 years ago this plot was a vacant lot in South Mountain. Over the years through loving dedication by Darren the TigerMountain Foundation (TMF) Team and local community the Garden of Tomorrow was born. The Garden now symbolizes resiliency and hope for more than those in our neighborhood.

TMF’s mission goes beyond cultivating vegetables; it’s about cultivating futures. TMF empowers kids, adults, and seniors through community gardens and landscaping initiatives. By teaching folks practical life skills like choosing healthy foods over processed meals healthier choices are made in the garden. This path keeps individuals out of trouble by keeping them occupied and continuously challenging their limits. The GOT is improving their lives, and strengthening the community with laughter and activities. The Garden of Tomorrow has become a pillar of positive change in it’s 17 years of cultivation.

Start at the beginning

At TMF, we believe in the power of the community to help itself. Instead of offering handouts, we provide a hand-up. Our approach is rooted in Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), where the community’s existing strengths are harnessed to create positive change. It’s about fostering self-sufficiency and resilience. At the garden we encourage and practice sustainability, from creativity through art to exploration through science. The Garden of Tomorrow is a place where sowing the seeds of change in our youth and elders is possible.

The Possibilities

The Garden of Tomorrow is just one example of what’s possible. When individuals and communities come together with a shared vision, things start to flourish. We are inviting everyone to Join us at The Garden of Tomorrow to continue to turn this once-vacant lot into a thriving garden. We encourage individuals to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, agriculture, and mathematics (STEAAM2) to create a brighter, more sustainable future. All of these topics are welcome at the Garden of Tomorrow, from agrioltaics, no-till, permaculture, or any other creative idea. All are welcome.

Join TMF at the Big Catz Culinary Experience Fundraiser

TigerMountain Foundation’s garden initiatives are special because people from all walks of life selflessly come together to help others in need. That’s how in 2020, we provided almost 54,000 meals of fresh, naturally grown produce to Maricopa county residents, many of them from socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods located in food deserts. But what matters more to us than produce is the lifeblood of TigerMountain Foundation: you. Our supporters like yourself are incredibly vital to our mission. You are the foundation on which we are built. TigerMountain Foundation provides many opportunities to give back and organizes fundraising events in Phoenix.

Support The Phoenix, AZ Community

And, frankly, 2020 was a rough year for everyone.  Quarantine has still kept our communities apart.  TigerMountain Foundation has consistently been an organization focused on connecting our communities and breaking down the social isolation that many communities suffer regardless of a pandemic.  This is another reason we are holding this event: to safely bring our community back together, reconnect, eat together, and celebrate the beauty we possess as whole. Let’s celebrate our local artists and creatives and enjoy a sunset meal on the farm.

Fundraising Events in Phoenix, AZ

Be a Big Cat and join us for the great reconnection of 2021, the Big Catz Culinary Experience. Each of you are big catz in our eyes, devoted to ending income and food insecurity. Be ready for a wonderful celebration that honors the diversity, empowerment, and accomplishments of TigerMountain Foundation. It will bring together community supporters, farmers, and members to enjoy a cultural culinary tour-experience of our oasis in the desert. We owe it to you to share an evening together. There is no way we could do the impactful work we do without a hand from others.

Join us April 1st, 2021 from 5 PM to 7:30 PM at the Spaces of Opportunity

This is an in-person event with required face mask usage and social distancing. Luckily, our Spaces of Opportunity space is nearly 20 acres big, so distancing will not be a challenge!

All fundraiser proceeds will benefit Phoenix communities facing food and/or income insecurity. Our efforts are especially strong in the South Phoenix area where the recidivism (return back to jail) rate is 81% — one of the highest in the nation. But we’re changing that: 80% of TigerMountain participants stay in school or out of jail. And you can help us make that even higher.

At the end of our day, our ultimate mission is to empower people by building sustainable community gardens, providing life skills support and workforce development through neighborhood revitalization and beautification. We hope to act as a change agent for healthy living – a healthy community where all citizens can reach their maximum potential. It certainly takes a village to accomplish this, and we are glad to have you at our side. We hope you are able to join us in-person during the evening of April 1st, 2021!

If you prefer to not come in-person to this fundraiser and still want to contribute, please donate to TigerMountain Foundation online (we are a 501(c)3 organization so you can claim a tax deduction). TigerMountain Foundation is a Qualifying Charity for the Arizona Tax Credit and you may be able to take a tax deduction. Your donation will make a significant difference in our ability to help others. Show your support here.

The strength of TigerMountain Foundation | Arizona

The growth of Tiger Mountain Foundation

The strength of TigerMountain Foundation

The first few steps

Darren Chapman grew up in Phoenix and Los Angeles during the 1970s, going to school in both cities for half of the year. Darren was caught between two cities. But for Chapman, it was not much of an issue. Getting a nice long ride on to and between school and back was always enjoyable. “I would sit and look out those windows and go, ‘Wow, man. Look at all of that — just land. Birds swooping’,” he said. “For me, it was the coolest thing in the world.”

For most of Darren Chapman’s life, now 55, he felt that there were only two options for him in life. He could either make A name for himself in the rough neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Or he could create and help build up the community. Even though he was almost sure that he would never be fully accepted into it anyways.

TigerMountain Foundation Mission and Models

Non-Profit Community Garden

TigerMountain Foundation (TMF)

Passage to a stronger community

Who We Are:

TigerMountain Foundation’s mission is to empower people by building flourishing community gardens, providing life skills support and workforce development through neighborhood revitalization and beautification.

As a change agent for healthy living, TMF envisions a healthy community where all citizens can reach their maximum potential.

What We Do:

Through our model of Asset Based Community Development, we motivate communities to better themselves from within. In South Phoenix and other challenged communities where we work, there are high patterns of incarceration, bad health choices and a low ranking education system along with closed schools.

To combat these challenges, we work hard to educate and inspire people within a broad intergenerational and multi-ethnic background. We have two important focus areas that govern and power the educational, instructional and mentoring engines of TigerMountain Foundation:

  • Community Gardens (Produce Production)
  • Landscaping

Through several years of seeing our impact, we have found that long term success looks like the following:

  • The restoration of pride in community through the beautification of vacant lots
  • A reduction of recidivism (80% of TMF participants stay in school or out of jail as opposed to the community’s current 81% jail recidivism)
  • A more productive youth with additional skills to prepare for employment and a better life
  • A stronger spirit of volunteerism and community engagement

How You Can Help:

  • Volunteer your time and expertise to help work in our community gardens; deliver fresh produce to a downtown food pantry; provide landscaping work to help low-income families
  • Donate cash to support our work (your donation can be BOTH a federal tax deduction and a state tax credit–meaning up to $400 annually will cost you nothing)
  • Donate tools, lawn/garden furniture, etc.

Thank you for caring about making our communities a better place to live for all!
